SHERWIN-WILLIAMS OFFERS ONLY TWO-COAT SYSTEM APPROVED BY NEPCOAT FOR NEW AND 100% BARE EXISTING STEEL FOR BRIDGES

Two-Coat Rather Than Three-Coat System Saves Time and Money on Bridge Construction and Maintenance

(CLEVELAND September 6, 2005) Sherwin-Williams Industrial and Marine Coatings offers the industry's only two-coat system for new and 100% bare existing steel for bridges that has been tested and accepted by the Northeast Protective Coatings Committee (NEPCOAT) of nine states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. The coating system, comprised of Sherwin-Williams Corothane(R) I Galvapak Moisture Cured Urethane Organic Zinc and Fast Clad(R) Urethane, may be used to reduce the labor costs required to apply three-coat systems.

"This is the first two-coat system ever to be placed on NEPCOAT's Qualified Products List," says Doni Riddle, vice president industrial and marine marketing, The Sherwin-Williams Company. "Its performance was judged against that of three-coat systems."

According to Riddle, the NEPCOAT-approved two-coat system allows a bridge to be painted in two-thirds the time it would normally take, with a cost savings of approximately 22%, while providing the same long-term performance and protection of the structure as conventional, three-coat systems.

The primer, Corothane I Galvapak Moisture Cured Urethane Organic Zinc, is a VOC-compliant, moisture-curing urethane zinc rich primer, designed for low temperature application to blast-cleaned surfaces down to 20 degrees F. It is easy to apply and recoat, abrasion and chemical resistant and resistant to mudcracking. The primer meets Class B requirements for Slip Coefficient and Creep Resistance, 0.54, and may be used for immersion service with recommended topcoats.

The topcoat, Fast Clad Urethane, is a fast-dry, single coat, aliphatic polyurea urethane specifically formulated for accelerated maintenance painting to allow entire maintenance coating systems to be completed in one shift. Designed for application over organic zinc rich primers, the coating's fast drying formulation reduces lane closure time and minimizes dirt and grit pick up. It is an ideal finish coating for projects requiring rapid return to service.

Accelerated lab and field testing of coating systems considered for NEPCOAT's Qualified Products List is performed for NEPCOAT by the National Transportation Product Evaluation Program (NTPEP) according to the American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHTO) AASHTO NTPEP R-31 criteria.
