Unless you have a keen interest in U.S. Naval history, you've probably never heard of Commander W.R. Anderson. But you may recall his achievement in 1959,along with a crew of 116 seamen, aboard the USS Nautilus.

Commander Anderson, in charge of the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, led the first manned voyage under the Arctic ice cap. This bold and courageous mission was successful in part because of the imagination needed to dream it, and the technical innovation needed to fulfill it.

The proud vessel now rests comfortably in Groton, Conn., where it is a historic landmark and tourist site. Partially submerged in the Thames River, the sub still faces the challenges of a corrosive environment, and still requires the imagination and innovation of those charged with the responsibility of keeping her preserved.

Sherwin-Williams is proud to have collaborated closely with the Navy and shipbuilder Electric Boat-General Dynamics to devise and test our DuraPlate UHS system - a solvent-free, edge-retentive system - that offers longer life cycles, high film build and application advantages. In short, this effort required both imagination and innovation, and it resulted in improved economies and efficiencies. Whether your next coatings project is on a scale similar to the Nautilus or not, you can be sure that Sherwin-Williams will bring the same level of imagination, innovation and commitment to every heavy-duty coatings challenge you may have.
