CARCLAD™ DTM URETHANE
Sherwin-Williams Industrial and Marine Coatings group
is introducing a new, single-coat direct-to-metal finish,
CarClad DTM Urethane, that is specially formulated for the
rail industry. A member of the ExpressTech™ family of coatings
technology engineered for improved end-user productivity,
CarClad DTM Urethane is a fast-dry aliphatic
polyurea that provides high build, high-performance protection.
It can be applied directly to properly prepared steel surfaces,
saving time and money on material and labor, thus
improving throughput and productivity.
Typically, rail cars are repainted every several years as part of
a routine maintenance schedule. In order to achieve the high
film build, performance and chemical resistance of an
epoxy/urethane system, this conventional method requires
painters to apply a two-coat system to the rail cars, which
includes a primer (epoxy) and a finish coat (urethane). CarClad
DTM Urethane provides the same film coverage in a single
application, dries in about four hours and saves an additional
“labor” coat or other associated costs. As a result, painters can
apply stencils to the rail cars in the same day, as opposed to
waiting until the next day when using the two-coat system.
Additionally, more can be coated in any given period.
The development of this new technology — a first in
industrial coatings — began three years ago as the result of
conversations with a rail customer. “We asked him if he could
have anything he wanted in a coating, what would it be?”
recalls Doni Riddle, vice president and director of Sherwin-
Williams Industrial and Marine Coatings Group. “He told
us he wanted a direct-to-metal urethane.”
Sherwin-Williams responded to the customer’s needs and
developed CarClad DTM Urethane for use in the rail industry.
It can be applied in one coat free of pinholes and outgassing
and outperforms a two-coat system because of its
high film build features (6 to 9 mils dft).
The high-gloss, low-VOC coating has superior color and
gloss retention and excellent corrosion and chemical resistance
properties. Its pot life is 2 hours at 77 degrees F, and there is no
sweat-in time. It can be sprayed with airless, conventional or
plural-component equipment.
WATERBASED TILE-CLAD® EPOXY
Waterbased Tile-Clad Epoxy offers performance
comparable to solvent-based tile clad along with the
low-VOC and low-odor advantages a waterborne
coating can offer.
Designed for use in harsh industrial
environments, Waterbased Tile-Clad
Epoxy contains an advanced technology
phenalkamine primer that provides
outstanding corrosion resistance. It
provides exceptional color and gloss
retention compared to solvent-based
epoxies, and can be applied in temperatures
as low as 40 degrees F.
Finish coats provide a high-gloss,
abrasion-resistant film that resists the yellowing
associated with solvent-based epoxies.
Waterbased Tile-Clad Epoxy is stain and chemical
resistant, is suitable for use in USDA-inspected facilities
and is non-flammable. The product also offers
fast dry and fast recoat times, and is ideal for use on
multiple substrates, such as steel, galvanized, aluminum
and masonry.
CONTROLTECH™ COATINGS FOR TANK LININGS, SECONDARY CONTAINMENT AND CORROSION CONTROL
Sherwin-Williams Industrial and Marine Coatings
group, with the introduction of its new ControlTech
family of coatings for tank linings, containment and
corrosion control, now offers the industry’s most comprehensive
line of low-VOC, high performance coating
systems for these applications.
Sherwin-Williams ControlTech product line
includes 26 low-VOC, advanced technology, highperformance
coatings engineered for use on concrete
or steel tanks, floors, drains, clarifiers, sumps and
slabs, and specialized equipment in a broad range of
industries. Included in the line are numerous thinfilm
and medium-film systems; a number of laminates
including single, double and flexible basecoat
systems; several mortar and mortar laminate systems;
and Sherwin-Williams Envirolastic Polyurea coating
systems for potable water, concrete, steel, geotextile
and repair applications.
A wide range of industries, including the electronics
manufacturing, water and wastewater, pharmaceutical
and food and beverage industries will
find Sherwin-Williams ControlTech coatings especially
useful.
