  • In this Q & A, Sherwin-Williams General Polymers Business Unit Director John Durig discusses the state of the industrial flooring industry.

Q: There is a new generation of floors being installed in several industrial markets. Where are they having the most impact?

Durig: Sherwin-Williams General Polymers floor systems are providing innovative, value-added solutions to owners and specifiers in automotive shops and dealerships as well as schools, but particularly in the pharmaceutical and food and beverage markets. Owners and specifiers for such facilities face a federally mandated need for cleanliness. As a result, they want a long-lasting seamless floor that is chemical-resistant, traffic-resistant and water-resistant. They also require minimal downtime.

Q: Obviously, new technology is at the root of this revolution.

Durig: Right. Our strategy is to provide innovative technology that satisfies market demands. Consider, for example, the technologies that make possible new decorative and design elements in our floors and technologies that have rapidly accelerated the speed of application. Both of these bring appreciable value to the owner.

Q: Is there value for the contractor?

Durig: Absolutely. If we’ve successfully demonstrated the value of our flooring systems to owners and specifiers, we can go to the contractors, whom we have trained and with whom we have partnered, and approve them to bid a job. And that’s essentially an exclusive club because during our contractor certification process, we’ve invested considerable time in ensuring that they can perform a quality installation. Educating not only contractors, but owners and specifiers about the possibilities of these new technologies remains of paramount importance to us. We are the only AIA-certified flooring company for continuing education units in the industry. We offer six such units, and they’re about how to create innovative solutions to problems encountered in the field. We share our knowledge, and I believe that has led to our standing as the single best supplier of resinous flooring systems in the world.

Sherwin-Williams General Polymers systems available only to certified contractors
