Sherwin-Williams Introduces ExpressTech® Family of Proprietary Coatings That Improve Productivity
Rapid-Return-to-Service Coatings Answer Customers’ Needs
(CLEVELAND – September 17, 2002) – Sherwin-Williams Industrial and Marine Coatings Group is introducing a number of revolutionary coatings engineered for improved end-user productivity under the name ExpressTech®. Many of the new ExpressTech coatings are proprietary technology products that share a common advantage: they help facilities owners and coatings applicators save time and money on coating jobs.
The development of the ExpressTech family is the result of listening to customer needs. “Whether they’re finishing bridges, rail cars or water tanks, industrial specifiers and applicators have long had a common desire,” says Doni Riddle, vice president and director of Sherwin-Williams Industrial and Marine Division. “In simple terms, they want everything to go faster. Now we can say, ‘Someone’s listening to you,’ and back it up with products that prove it.”
For example, several ExpressTech coatings reduce traditionally multi-coat systems by one coat or more coats, generating end-user savings in not only labor but insurance, equipment usage and containment setup as well. All of the ExpressTech coatings offer significant benefits, either by reducing application and labor costs, providing faster throughput, faster return to service of equipment, faster stack times in fabrication shops or lowering VOC emissions.
The new coating products that are debuting as members of the ExpressTech family include:
Fast Clad DTM Urethane, a single-coat, direct-to-metal urethane that equals the performance of conventional epoxy/urethane systems. An aliphatic polyurea, it eliminates the pinholing and outgassing concerns associated with conventional urethanes. It dries fast and can be applied with airless spray equipment, brush or roll - just like a conventional urethane. Fast Clad DTM Urethane has a two-hour pot life and can also be recoated in two hours, a feature sure to broaden its appeal in industrial markets and fabrication shop applications.
Fast Clad DOT Urethane is an aliphatic polyurea finish coat specifically formulated for use over a zinc-rich primer in an accelerated bridge painting system. Its fast-drying formulation reduces lane closure time and minimizes dirt and grit pick up, so the product can be applied with sufficient time to dry for containment take-down and lane reopening at the end of a 12-hour shift. It can be used in fabrication shops as well as for field maintenance.
CarClad DTM Urethane is a single-coat, direct-to-metal aliphatic polyurea formulated for the rail industry. It improves throughput and productivity when used as an exterior coating for tank cars, hopper cars and locomotives.
Fast Clad HB Acrylic is a single-component, one-coat acrylic that cuts costs in new construction or maintenance projects by eliminating the need for two- or three-coat systems. The coating offers 5 to 8 mils DFT in a single coat with no outgassing when applied over a zinc-rich primer. Conventional acrylics cannot be applied at greater than 2-3 mils DFT over a zinc-rich primer, thereby necessitating two acrylic coats over the primer. Fast Clad HB Acrylic can also be applied over a variety of other primers or directly to prepared steel.
Fast Clad FD Epoxy is an economical, fast-dry, fast-recoat, polyamide epoxy that will shorten dry-to-handle times and increase productivity in shop applications. Fast Clad FD Epoxy can be applied as a high-build coating (up to 6-8 mils DFT in a single application). It can be applied to marginally prepared surfaces and is VOC-compliant at 340 g/L.
Fast Clad Zinc applies better and performs better than any other inorganically reinforced zinc primer on the market. This very fast-dry primer can be recoated in 2 to 3 hours, making it ideal for shop applications. The reinforced film offers durable performance and excellent resistance to topcoat bubbling, dry spray and mudcracking. Fast Clad Zinc is acceptable for use in immersion service with recommended topcoats and has excellent touchup and repair properties consistent with other organic zincs.
FasTop Urethane Floor System is a heavy-duty floor system that offers a six-to-eight-hour return to service. It is available in both a self-leveling, water-based, urethane slurry system and a urethane mortar system.
Envirolastic Polyurea is an extremely rapid-return-to-service coating for use in a wide range of industrial applications. Coated substrates can be returned to service in just minutes, significantly reducing downtime. The product combines tensile strength and elongation properties with low permeability and high impact resistance.
