Sherwin-Williams Introduces CarClad™ DTM Urethane – First Direct-To-Metal Aliphatic Polyurea Urethane Finish For Rail Industry
Goes On as One Coat, Performs Like a Two-Coat System
(CLEVELAND – January 24, 2003) Sherwin-Williams Industrial and Marine Coatings group is introducing a new, single coat, direct-to-metal finish, CarClad™ DTM Urethane that is specially formulated for the rail industry. A member of the ExpressTech™ family of coatings engineered for improved end-user productivity, CarClad DTM Urethane is a fast dry, aliphatic polyurea that provides high build, high performance protection. It can be applied directly to properly prepared steel surfaces, saving time and money on material and labor, thus improving throughput and productivity.
Typically, rail cars are repainted every several years as part of a routine maintenance schedule. In order to achieve the high film build, performance and chemical resistance of an epoxy urethane system, the conventional method requires painters to apply a two-coat system to the rail cars, which includes a primer (epoxy) and a finish coat (urethane). CarClad DTM Urethane provides the same film coverage in a single application and dries in about four hours. As a result, painters can apply stencils to the rail cars in the same day, as opposed to waiting until the next day when using the two-coat system.
The development of this new technology—a first in industrial coatings—began three years ago as the result of conversations with a customer. “We asked one of our rail customers if he could have anything he wanted in a coating, what would it be?” recalls Doni Riddle, vice president and director of Sherwin-Williams Industrial and Marine Division. “He told us he wanted a direct-to-metal urethane.”
Sherwin-Williams responded to the customer’s needs and developed CarClad DTM Urethane for use in the rail industry. It can be applied in one coat, free of pinholes and outgassing, and out performs a two-coat system because of its high film build features (6 to 9 mils dry film thickness).
The high gloss, low-VOC coating has superior color and gloss retention and excellent corrosion and chemical resistance properties. The pot life of CarClad DTM Urethane is 2 hours at 77º F, and there is no sweat-in time, so the coating is ready to use immediately after mixing.
The Sherwin-Williams Chemical Coatings Division, with more than 135 years of experience in products finishing technology, serves the chemical coatings market through a North American network of company-owned locations and with expanding global reach. Sherwin-Williams broad line of low-VOC coatings, full range of technical support and just-in-time distribution capabilities allows finishers to specify quality coatings with the assurance of regulatory compliance.
